“News”: Windows 7 Beta leaked to internet

Downloads of a new build of Microsoft Corp.’s upcoming Windows 7 operating system have soared in the last two days, with thousands of systems now pulling pirated copies from BitTorrent sites. Searches today on the Pirate Bay BitTorrent site, for example, returned multiple listings of Windows 7 Build 7000, which Microsoft identifies as a beta candidate in the filename. The torrent is a disk image of the 32-bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate; a 64-bit version is not yet available. The most heavily trafficked Windows 7 BitTorrent on Pirate Bay showed more than 4,300 seeders and about 7,500 leechers.

Bloggers who have downloaded the pirated operating system — such as ZDNet.com’s Ed Bott — are reporting that its end-user licensing agreement labels the new build as the beta that Microsoft has promised it will open to the public in early 2009. Although Microsoft hasn’t specified a release date, information published on its own Web site earlier this month hinted that the beta would become available no later than Jan. 13. And with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer slated to deliver a keynote speech Jan. 7 on the evening before the opening of the International CES trade show in Las Vegas, speculation has been brisk that he will not only talk about Windows 7, but possibly also announce the immediate availability of the beta. Windows 7 is scheduled to ship late next year or in early 2010, according to statements made previously by Microsoft.

Not a big news. I know many people already checked it in previous version and they say much better than xp. We have to wait for full!

I'm using it now. It's actually very stable and definitely an improvement over Vista.

You might want to think about publishing actual news, not 3 days old stories.

thats funny I got mine off usenet and tested it out last night.

It's pretty and all, but I dont like my OS eating up 500+ mb of ram just on the desktop.

its just vista anyway you look at it.

    nlite and winxp = happiness

fansa: that's why it's title "news", not normal title. mainstream media are little slower than pirates.

Oh good. Cause I really thought it was "News" before the title. Sometimes people can be really funny.

Well, I hope this exciting news will be published tomorrow on other blogs and websites.

    Take care.

Some in here says its improvement over vista? Im refreshing system soon but I have doubts if I should put my (legal) vista 32bit ultimate again instead windows 7. What you guys think? Im not in the mood to install windows weekly but everything that works better than vista (i heard it does) is always welcome. So if its stable and updateable perhaps(?) I think its worth a shot before I can buy legal one from my work :)

    @ 11 kokkeli

The W7 Beta 1 is pretty stable and not only that, but it's also quite peppy. Been using the beta and previous builds now for awhile as my main OS and I haven't really encountered any issues, other than the sleep function facking up.

  15. kokkeli
    December 30th, 2008 | 20:47

    @14 xyztynz

cheerios m8. may i ask if its also updateable like vista versions have been? Maybe also test x64 if it comes, been satisfied at work with 64bit version being faster a bit more than 32.

    December 30th, 2008 | 20:55

anyone who thinks this is "just vista" clearly doesn't get it. it's what vista SHOULD have been – but it's much better. currently using it as my main OS and i think it's great. very stable and very fast. uses less than 10gb disk space as well.

if the activation crack ends up working, i'll be keeping this for a long time ..

Running in VMware right now. Full installation from first boot of VM until desktop was completely up and useable was 25-30 minutes. 2 Ghz dualcore and 1 GB RAM. Very fast, responsive and I hope it's just as stable as the previous build "released".

    December 30th, 2008 | 21:32

I'm running Windows 7 and Vista dual boot right now.

I have to say, Windows 7 is faster but is far from the
release stages. Obviously people on here haven't tried
out every single function in Windows 7 because it locks
up during alot of stuff. But I like it. The taskbar is
ugly as hell IMHO. Installation was extremely fast I
must say. The lockups I've had are easily fixable so
I'm looking forward to running Windows 7 in the future.

1 Area of Lockup is the Updating of Base Score.
I can't remember the others but Ill repost if I remember

dose any1 actually know the min spec. I wanted to put it on my laptop but its only runing 1.6 ghz (x2) and 2 gb ram and a crap nvidia card. what do ye think?

  21. Hank
    December 30th, 2008 | 21:38

i ran the base score and it worked fine .. never locked up at all ..

I wouldn't be surprised if MS "leaked" Windows 7 themselves.
After the Vista desaster they need some positive feedback.
Even if it gets started in unconventional ways.

Windows 7 looks promising, lets hope it will turn out to be the better XP.

I do agree i had alot of driver issues with vista ,onboard sound would ,was no drivers for em ,But the strange thing is windows 7 has em,and also it does not crash 100% a improvement

    December 30th, 2008 | 22:55

i really want to try this the system resources used by vista is rediculus, i poersonnaly av a really high spec pc and it doesnt dent into it too much but its certainly slower then it should and has between 1-1.5 gig of ram used always which is ridiculus to sya the least, this windows 7 looks promissing with its extremely low resources and min spec it should be a winner if its all done right, only problem i have with downloadng this beta is that theres no x64 version out yet and the .5gig of wasted ram not recognised by x86 really annoys me lol

    December 30th, 2008 | 22:57

"I wouldn't be surprised if MS "leaked" Windows 7 themselves." there is gonna be an official open beta in january, that is no secret. this so called "leaked" beta is probably gonna come out anyway next days, someone just coulndt wait…

To everyone saying Vista failed, this is what Vista should have been…Windows 7 is in fact Windows Vista. It uses the Vista kernel (6.X) but has been improved (UI, performance, etc). The drivers used in Windows 7 are Vista drivers.

Does anyone think the beta would be in a good enough state to replace my media center pc hooked up to my tv?

  31. Bob
    December 31st, 2008 | 03:59

Good state or not… this is not a new build but the former one renamed.

From now on ppl can kiss beta's bye-bye! That mens no more beta builds in jnuary baddab!

They've renamed it cause someone leaked it and it shouldn't!
This is also the reason MS will stop giving beta's to everyone they did before… most likely they'll keep a closed beta testing.

So use it… it's your last chance until final!

  32. baddab
    December 31st, 2008 | 10:54

any evidence or source for what you are saying? microsoft couldnt care less if a beta "leaks", when everyone expects them to release a beta or Release Candidate 1 for everyone in January… just look with all the beta "wave" versions of the Windows Live Stuff they were releasing this year, and that partially was also "leaking" ahead of its official time.

  33. Seriously
    December 31st, 2008 | 11:38

I don't think Microsoft will lose too much money by having a bunch of "illegal" testers posting their problems with this OS. This is like stealing my sisters homework then doing it for her.

  34. December 31st, 2008 | 12:19

usen it now better than vista x32 but still cant beat xp . its as if microsoft just added a second patch to vista and this is the result . and to think they expect people to buy this as some amazing new o.s i think i'll just go get myself a mac or turn to linux when they stop updates for xp . screw you bill …

ohh and no problem with drivers just install driver with troubleshoot compatibility programme.

@subbywrx my system frozze to when i ran Updating of Base Score but i fixed it by updating display adapters in device manager and it downloaded some m.s update WDDMv1.1 .

    December 31st, 2008 | 13:33

i tested it twice but didnt work fine
i get a problem with chkdsk or something like that
the first time it didnt let me install anything it said there was n error with disk, when i restarted it checked disk n deleted many files, then it worked nice.
for some reasons i installed again after formating n the same happened, but this time it kept going to the chkdsk once n again n gain
so i had to go back to vista :(
any one had this problem ? any solution ?

    January 1st, 2009 | 15:22

fudzilla … it might just be Frudo tripping again, so I might be wrong.

@Seriously, what has MS to lose? Well, early preview of an OS might sink the final's adoption chances. Look at [email protected]| … that's what MS wants to avoid.

Showing a final product is one thing… showing a private beta to the public is another.

Also I just got this of ZDnet:
"Bott also notes the time-bombed expiration on Beta 1 is August 2009. Latest RTM date I’ve heard circulating is July. With no Beta 2 of Windows 7 on the schedule (according to my sources), it’s full steam ahead to final over the next few months."
